Learning outcomes
The aim of this topic is to provide students with improving information from rapidly growing area of molecular biology. "Structure and evolution of genomes" follows the lectures from "Molecular biology" and precedes and complements lectures from "Pharmacogenomics" and "Biotechnology of drugs". The lecture offers many useful and interesting consequences to these disciplines. Modern explanation of origin and evolution of life systems is done; importance of ribonucleic acids in these processes are emphasized. Results of the project of human genome mapping are used in commentary to genome structure. Dynamics of the processes by which new gene variants arise, importance of repetitive sequences, mobile genetic elements, and gene interactions between cell organelles are discussed. Mentioned are also questions about evolution of sexuality. Basic methods of genome studies and milestones are described.
