What is biology, the scientific methods, designing experiments, applying the scientific method 2) What is life, evolution explains the unity and diversity of life 3) Cell biology, cells, development of the cell theory, prokaryotic cells, eukaryotic cells, viruses, prions, the origin of eukaryoryotic cells. 4) Molecular biology, energy, water, the organic molecules of life, the enery of life 5) Genetics, basic genetics, DNA, chromosomes, gene funcion 6) Mutation, types of mutations, genetic technology 7) The kingdoms of life, the origins of multicellularity 8) Viruses, bacteria 9) Plants, animals 10) Chordates, tunicates, lancelets, vertebrates 11) The nervous system, the endocrine system, the musculoskeletal system, the circulatory systém, the respiratory system, 12) Ethology, behaviour, potulations, ecosystems 13) Evolution, Darwinian evolution, evidence for evolution Practice 1) Microscopy, methodology of laboratory work 2) Plant cells microscopy and characterisation 3) Bacteria and Yeast microscopy and description 4) Protozooa and bird 5) Mammals, animal models, model dissection

Learning outcomes
The goal of study is to extend the knowledge of biology and genetics obtained at secondary schools so that the students might obtain the necessary fundamentals for both the contents and terminology of these disciplines, on whose basis they could continue the study of applied biological disciplines taught at the Pharmaceutical Faculty. The study will be aimed at the general, molecular and cellular aspects of biology, at evolutionary biology and at the fundamentals of genetics. The molecular biological topic is not involved because an obligatory subject Molecular Biology is in the second year of study.

Basic knowledge of biology, biochemistry and physics are required

Assessment methods and criteria
Complete practical training. Students are required to process protocols. Ending the course: credit and oral exam.
