Course content
Lectures 1. Animal Protection and Welfare (definition, meaning, content, history). Direct and indirect protection of animals. The law on the protection of animals against cruelty in general - 5 bans. 2. Protection and welfare of animals (breeding, transport, slaughter and killing). 3. Protection and welfare of companion animals. Protection of species requiring special care. 4. Protection and welfare of wild animals. The protection and welfare of zoo animals and circus animals. The protection and welfare of experimental animals. 5. Animal protection authorities. Administrative offenses. Criminal law - criminal offenses in the area of animal welfare. 6. Protection of animals at the Council of Europe. Animal protection in the European Union. International treaties on the protection of animals. Practicals 1. Advancing animal care. 2. Law no. 246/1992 Coll., On the protection of animals against cruelty, as amended. The purpose, content, basic concepts of the law. 3. Law on the protection of animals against cruelty in general - case studies. 4. Protection and welfare of farm animals - case studies (housing, nutrition, nursing, breeding, technical support). 5. Protection and welfare of animals during transport - case studies (handling, loading, unloading, transport). 6. protection and welfare of farm animals - a case study (slaughter, euthanasia and killing). 7. protection of companion animals - case studies (breeding, animal species requiring special care, killing animals, abandoned animals, etc..). 8. protection and welfare of wild animals - case studies - direct protection of animals (trapping, hunting, holding in captivity, public performances, etc..). 9. protection of wild animals - case studies - indirect protection of animals (nature and landscape protection, hunting, fishing, etc..). 10. Protection and welfare of experimental animals - case studies (definitions, authorization for breeding, delivery and use of experimental animals, the experimental conditions and their leadership, professional competence, evidence, etc..). 11. Law on the protection of animals against cruelty - sanctions. Model solutions of examples. 12. Presentation of seminar work. 13. Credit.

Learning outcomes
The course is specialized in various aspects of animal welfare. Lectures cover legislation of the protection of animals against cruelty, particular legal regulations concerning animal treatment, the protection of individual species of wild animals, protection of animals during import, export and transfer. During the practical training students are taught to recognize cruelty and inadequate treatment of animals. The course also includes inspection procedures applied during local examination of animal welfare, approaches in the case of violation of legal regulations and imposing sanctions.
